Oh Sinn Fein…
You are making the centenary pretty hard on those of us who live over the puddle and can’t spend 8 weeks in Ireland.
First there’s the celebration of Cumann na mBan and the women Nationalists, on Mother’s/Women’s day at the very beginning of March – which is a serious temptation for a woman like me who is obsessed with women in Irish history. Then there are the counter-activities that are planned as an alternative to the state-sponsored shit show on Easter at the end of March. Follow that up with what sounds like an absolutely brilliant projection installation at the GPO and the commemorations for the actual dates of the Rising at the end of April (that the state seems to be shamefully ignoring entirely during the Easter celebration).
What’s a girl to do? I have a major conundrum. I can manage MAYBE 4 weeks. Any advice from you Irish readers? By now if you’ve been reading my blog, you probably have a good sense of what inspires me, and I could use your help with this.
Simply put, I cannot take part in all of it but I am having a hell of a time trying to figure out which portion of it is the most important. It’s hurting my head and heart to miss any of it, which is why I’m stuck. What do YOU think about the centenary? When and where will you be?
